If you consider yourself an American, Today is that special day to celebrate our disfunctional relationship with Mexico.
Cinco De Mayo is the celebration of Mexico's defeat of French Troops and the ouster of Napoleon's puppet Maximillian in 1862. Lead by the brave General Zartagosa and Portofino Diaz, outnumbered, Mexico defeated the technologically advanced French. The Mexicans were also supplied by arms delivered to the boarder by U.S. General Sheridian which arrived at the front just in time. So really Cinco De Mayo ought to be a time to celebrate US-Mexican cooperation; instead, the Mexicans here and abbroud continue to foster resentment.
Despite the articles leftist psychobabble (Bro, California’s Indian population is small band of casino operators, get over it.) this article makes the case that there is a direct connection between immigration and environmental destruction that will not change until we leave the Union.
Interestingly, his arguments are closely associated with those of libertarians something FC has commented on before, if we are to remove ourselves from the union these two groups - the pinko enviro-facists and mountain home shut-ins need to come together and find common cause. This may already be happening in the wilds around Eureka. Perhaps this article portends a movement in that direction in the southland? Who knows, but if FC's gun touting cousins in Le Mesa are any indication, it might happen. Everything that is important to the Southland Cowboys – the government staying out of their business, access to weed and water, limited immigration, etc. - are issues of the enviro-lefties.
In the last month, two intriguing, some would say seminal, events in the history of Untied States-Latin American immigration came to pass. The first was the historic level of Latin support for the Republican Presidential candidate. In Iowa, New Mexico and Nevada many pundits believe that without a high level of Latin support President Bush would not have won a second term. The second, reiterated again in Chile this past weekend, is the Presidents steadfast commitment to the creation of a guest worker program that would allow Mexicans to work legally in the United States, while not fully emigrating.
At face value, both of these events could be perceive as benevolent. Growing support among Latinos for the Republicans is a rebuke to the Pat Buchanan-style Conservatives who view Mexicans as some kind of invading hoard destined to destroy our historic political culture. By voting Conservatively, Latino’s have proved to be much closer to their Anglo countrymen than most assumed and definitely not the radical negative force on our culture many doomsayers predicted. And, with the guest worker program, the government is finally beginning to acknowledge that the current “do-nothing” policy is broken. Upon deeper inspection; however, the real nature of Bush’s approach to immigration becomes apparent. What President Bush and his Machiavellian cohorts are trying to do is develop a strategy that allows them to have it both ways on immigration and at the same time relieve wealthy Mexican elites of any responsibility to improve the lot of the poor in their country.
To review, the proposed guest worker program allows Mexicans to register with the United States government, pay taxes and move freely between both countries. These guests, who would be drawn almost exclusively from rural Mestizo populations of North Mexico, would fulfill our need for low-cost menial labor particular in the home service and agriculture industry. Importantly, they will not be allowed to vote in the United States and, at least as of now, no program is in place to encourage them to fully assimilate into American society. In fact, the guest worker program may actually make attaining citizenship and setting down roots in the United States more difficult in the long run.
And therein lies the ruse the Republican Party is playing on the American and Mexican people. Remember, the hopeless people flooding the US border today are not the white Y Tu Mama Tambien-making, Salma Hayek's you see on TV, they are overwhelmingly disenfranchised Indo-Mexicans who have been a pawn in the political machinations of European-Mexican and American elites since very day Cortez laid waste to Tenochtitlan. This Republican proposal is yet another move in a sad legacy of actions whose purpose is to keep a seething revolution from boiling over and overthrowing the land holding, European-Mexican elites who control Mexico. In this great game, Bush has played the perfect strategic move; one clearly rooted in a deep understanding of what ails wealthy Mexican society. But he takes it to whole other level. By executing the guest worker program, Bush can pander to American Latinos and, at the same time, slow the growth of United States citizenship (and voting rights) among poorer, under-educated Mexicans immigrants, a group who undoubtedly would vote with the Democrats and ultimately want out of Mexico all together.
So what will happen when this program is passed? In America, overtime, the pattern would become clear, with the disenfranchised poor Mexican-Americans never allowed to voting rights in the U.S., American Latino political power would slowly swing to socially conservative, stable, assimilated Latinos. The poor, a migratory majority of Americano-Mexicans, would be stuck in a non-citizen, trans-national limbo of guest worker pass cards and constant north-south fluxations. All the while, Mexican elites are relieved of any responsibility to improve the lot of their rural poor because now instead of building trade unions and mass political action the poor must constantly be on the move in order to survive. Working furiously while on the American side and freely spending during their brief sojourns “home.” Anyway, you look at it this it is a win-win for rich landholders on both sides of the border.
So, despite the fawning press, this program is not charitable at all; it is a power play by the rich in D.C. and Mexico City to pander to the masses and at the very same time screw them over, shame on us for not protecting and encouraging such a basic American right, the right to have a say in how you are governed.
President Bush and all his buds will pull out all the stops and spend any sum overseas to ensure our security but do almost nothing at home in our ports and along the boarder. At least these guys, who by the way, are a highly, highly conservative bunch, have called out this hypocrisy. Do not look for this story on Fox News anytime soon.
A notorious waffler, this seems to Free California to be the clearest policy position he has taken on any issue. For it to be on an issue this polarizing to the left is a great sign that he just might be emerging from his policy slumber.
Kerry was clear in his proposal. It will be up to the states to decide, whether or not undocumented workers will be allowed to get drivers licenses and with the help of Mexico (yeah that'll happen, I am so sure Don Vincente will crack down?) he would boost border security and lock down el route de El Norte. In exchange, illegals would be able to get on the fast track to citizenship and there would be a broad amnesty for those in country at least 5 years. Something needs to be done and this is a way to positively solve the problem.
In different language, Kerry's program is essentially the same as the Presidents. The only bad part about all this good news is that everyone agrees immigration is a mess and yet things will stay the same.
Never the less, bravo Johnny! you actually took a real position on an issue, will wonders never cease. Now, if you could just get cracking on that plan for Iraq and those crazy Mullah's you actually might have something here.
A study released today by the Pew Hispanic Center reported that of the 3 in 10 of the new jobs produced in the last year were filled by illegal immigrants.
That's 28.5% of all new jobs. Supporters of open immigration will now line up and claim that these new jobs were filled because Americans will not take almost all of the jobs produced. A false proposition. Employers love the job market the way it is. Mass immigration provides an endless pool of workers who have no rights, never complain and can be terminated at anytime. Free labor means that both employers and the government take no initiative to bring out of work people (the poor and nearly exclusively non-white) into the work force through education or job programs. And all the while these new jobs result in almost no new tax revenue.
Where does this end? Ultimately, with the resulting deflation on salaries, this can only result a complete elimination of our middle class and a society of super-rich and abject poor. In other words, the exact type of society most immigrats sought to escape in the first place.
This should be setting off alarm bells across the nation and yet it will barely gets mentioned on the news. The immigration problem is not about hard working outsiders trying to make a better life for themselems in America anymore. It is about a business community exploiting all of us by creating a society that best suits their stock price, a governement at the complete mercy of P.C. immigrants boosters on the left who hear immigration reform and automatically think racial fight, and business-first advocates on the right sucking us dry.
So, as the election campaign heats up, be sure and remember every time the administration trumps recent job gains 3 in 10 of those jobs went to people breaking the law. And they claim to be the law and order candidates. Yeah right they only like law and order when it can be dispensed on the end of a tomahawk missle.
After weeks of rumors it has just been confirmed that Jorge Vergara, owner of the heath supplement company Omnilife and the Mexican Soccer League's Chivas de Guadalajara, has been granted an expansion franchise in the America's Major League Soccer. The team, based in LA, will be be called Chavis USA. Sounds great, right? One of the best Mexican soccer organizations can inject a little latin marketing pizzazz into the somewhat boring MLS! But there is an ugly truth behind this move. Chivas de Guadalajara is a very traditional organization that, in a fit of Aztec pride, refuses to sign any non-Mexicans to the squad and, shockingly, they are planning to follow similar racist path here in the USA.
As the new team director, Ivar Sisniega, made clear: "We would have eight or nine Mexican players on the team and the others will be Americans. We're going to look around and try to recruit mostly Mexican American or Hispanic players to the extent that that's possible. But our team will communicate in Spanish and our fan base will probably want to speak to them in Spanish. We're going to have American players, but it will be important for them to learn Spanish if they don't know Spanish."
This is a shocking comment. Anyone who knows anything about American history must stand up and reject this team and their way of doing business. This kind of backward thinking might work in Mexico but it cannot stand in the United States. Major League Soccer ought to be ashamed of themselves to allow this kind of thinking to leak over the boarder. What he is saying is simple, instead of chosing the best, Chivas USA are going to hire mostly "their kind." Somewhere in the depths of hell P.W. Botha and George Wallace are smiling.
Just because Mexicans have this false sense of victimization does not mean they can live by a different standard. Someone should do the American thing and sue the hell out of Chavis USA.
Having said all of that the fact is the almost all the criminals executed in California since 1978 have been white. Of the 11 people executed only 2 people, Manuel Babbitt (Hispanic) and Jaturun Siripongs (Asian), where non-white. Yes, you read that correctly, though everyone assumes African Americans are unjustly executed the fact is California has never, once, executed a black person.
