Every once in a while we come across some little snippet of Califoricana that just warms our heart. Such is the case with the Tevis Cup Ride.
Held annually in and around Auburn, Ca, the Tevis Cup is a hundred mile endurance horse race through the the Sierras. When the race first started back in 1955 most people doubted modern horses (or their riders) would be up to challenge. But those fears proved unfounded and the race has been contested ever since. Today, the Tevis Cup is the oldest race of it's kind in world.
Each rider who completes the race receives the coveted Completion Award Buckle as long their mount is deemed "fit". And the buckle is well deserved, the course covers over 8,000 vertical feet through rocky terrain in searing summer heat.
The Cup was named for Lloyd Tevis (1824 - 1899) by his grandson Will Tevis, a prominent San Francisco businessman and early benefactor of the Ride, and was first awarded in 1959 to Nick Mansfield, riding Buffalo Bill, an eleven year old TB Cross gelding. Last years winner was Heather Reynolds riding Master Motion covering the course in 16:23.
Check out the Tevis Cup if you are in the Tahoe area this weekend. Cool yee ode California event.
